Requirements
Participants must be 14 years of age or older to enroll in our Learn to Belay class. If you're looking for instruction for a younger climber, please explore our Crag Akademie youth climbing programs.
What You'll Learn
- How to tie in using the figure 8 follow-through knot
- Proper top-rope belaying using the PBUS method
- Common climbing commands and terminology
- An introduction to climbing equipment, including harnesses and belay devices
- Basic climbing safety and crag etiquette
We teach all of our beginner climbing classes using the Edelrid Jul 2 assisted-braking belay device. If you already own a different belay device or would like to learn on another device, simply bring it with you and our instructors will be happy to provide personalized instruction.
What's Included
- 2 hours of professional instruction
- Full-day admission to the crag
- Complete climbing equipment rental, including a harness, climbing shoes, and a belay device
By the end of the class, you'll have the knowledge and confidence to pass the Top Rope Certification at Übergrippen (or any other climbing facility) and climb with other belay-certified climbers.

- ÜG Members: FREE
- Non-Members: $40 for first person, $20 each additional
Add-on Membership (2 weeks): $45 per person

After completing your class, you will certainly want to return to UG to take our belay certification test and climb on your own! Add on a 14-day trial membership (including equipment rental) for just $45 per person. You can return every day during those 2 weeks and experience all ÜG has to offer! Climbing, yoga, fitness, and community!
PLUS, if you sign up for a 6 month or longer prepaid membership OR a monthly membership before the end of your trial membership and we will credit back to you the FULL AMOUNT of the trial membership toward your membership cost.
Cancellation Policy:
8+ days notice: Full refund (you are welcome to reschedule if you prefer)
3-7 days notice: No refund, but you may reschedule your class.
Less than 72 hours notice: No refund or credit will be offered.
Inclement Weather Advisory:
Our facilities never close unless our staff cannot get to the facility to open the building. Please plan on attending any class that you sign up for unless you are notified via email and/or social media that the class has been cancelled or the facility has closed for the day.
