Scouting Climbing Merit Badge

In accordance with Scouting America guidelines, we provide two dedicated climbing instructors for the scout group. One of our instructors is certified to sign off on the scouts’ merit badge. Due to the Scouting America requirement of two instructors per 12 scouts, we must limit this class to 12 participants. If you are NOT part of Scouting America, we can custom fit this class to your needs.

Price: It is $495 for 12 participants. We recognize the difficulty of filling a class, but non-scouts are welcome to join this class as well.

All scouts in the class will be provided:

a climbing harness
a helmet.

If you're unsure of the exact number and names of the scouts attending, you can submit this information up to 4 days beforehand. This will help ensure we have their waivers completed by the parents and that they have enough time to complete the required online course and quiz before the in-person class.

All of our classes are on Sunday's from 2pm to 5pm!

Arrival:

Because there is a lot of hands-on lessons to cover in this class, we ask all participants to plan to arrive at the crag 10-15 minutes before the scheduled class to check-in, verify that waivers are signed, and be fitted for a climbing harness and helmut.

To expedite the check-in process, we strongly recommend that everyone (both scouts and parents staying to watch) complete a release prior to arrival at www.ugclimbing.com/release. For those without a signed release upon arrival, parents will be required to complete one at our waiver stations before they are allowed to enter the facility.

Scouts should wear athletic shoes and comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for free movement during climbing and other physical activities. No open-toed shoes, sandals, flip-flops, or similar footwear are allowed. Rental shoes are available for $6 per child and can be paid for at the time of rental.

Departure:
Please have scouts ready to be picked up by the scheduled end time of the class. All rental gear must be returned at the end of the class. If any scouts want to stay longer to climb, they can purchase a day pass and gear rental at 50% off the standard prices. Please note that adults must actively supervise all children under 14 years of age for any climbing, including auto-belays. All adults must also complete an auto-belay orientation.

Climbing Shoes!
If your scouts would like to use climbing shoes, we are happy to rent them for $6 per pair.

However, for most scouts without extensive climbing experience, athletic shoes are sufficient and allow for a quicker start. You can decide whether to rent climbing shoes on the day of the class.

Parents and Family!
If you have other scouts or family members who would like to climb during the class, we offer a discounted rate of $30 for a day pass and gear rental.

All class participants, including parents who plan to stay and observe during the party, must have a signed release on file from each child's parent or legal guardian—no exceptions. Please have parents complete the release form at www.ugclimbing.com/release before the party to ensure the scouts get the most climbing time possible.

Scouts without a release signed by a parent or legal guardian will not be allowed to participate in climbing activities. Only a child's parent or legal guardian can sign the waiver—Scout Masters or other adults cannot sign on behalf of any scout other than their own child. Please plan ahead and ensure all parents complete the release form before arriving.

• Full refunds will be given for cancellations made 14 days or more before the event.
• A 50% refund will be given for cancellations made 7-14 days before the event.
• No refunds will be given for cancellations made less than 7 days before the event.
